5 Ways to Help You Recover & Manage Mental Health Issues

Learning to recover from a mental illness and manage it throughout your life is possible. It’s also a process and is one where you’ll have good days and bad days, successes and setbacks. Be sure to seek support and give yourself a lot of kindness and consideration as you go through this process, taking it one day at a time. Developing strategies to keep you on track is a key way that you can take positive steps in your recovery. Here are some tips for how you can do that.

1. Reach Out to Friends and Family

You can’t recover on your own. While many of the issues you will need to work through are personal, it’s important to open up to those you love. Trust them so that they can support you through your struggles and cheer you on through your successes. This also helps to prevent against isolation, secrecy and fear. Start by telling people you really trust and let them know of ways that they can best help you.

2. Set Boundaries

When you’re recovering, it’s important to learn how to set boundaries and say “no.” If you’re overwhelmed at school, home, with friends or extracurriculars, learn to reduce stress by setting limits and taking care of yourself.

3. Cultivate Relaxation Techniques

Living with a mental health diagnosis is stressful in and of itself. Unfortunately, additional stress only tends to exacerbate symptoms. Therefore, find ways to relax that you enjoy so that you can manage stress when it hits. Practices like yoga and deep breathing help with mindfulness but if you find another activity helpful in reducing your stress—like reading, painting or playing a sport—be sure to incorporate that into your regular schedule.

4. Manage Physical Well Being

Our minds and our bodies are very much interconnected, and as a result it’s beneficial to maintain your physical well-being while you’re recovering from your mental health issues. Be sure to exercise regularly, get enough sleep and eat well. This will help stabilize your mood and decrease stress.

5. Seek Professional Assistance

Once again, you cannot overcome your mental health condition alone. While it may be scary, seeking the help of a mental health professional will enable you to discover root causes of your condition and develop healthy coping strategies. With the right tools and support, recovery is possible.
