Tips for Parents and Families While Their Loved One is in Treatment

Watching a loved one go through treatment for substance abuse or a mental disorder can be very difficult for those around them. Throughout this process, it is important that they also have support which can  include support from other family, friends, and counseling. Here are some tips for parents, families and friends while their loved one is in treatment.

Be patient

Understand that your loved one is going through a challenging ordeal that does not have set timelines. Recovery can be a lengthy process and they need to take however much time is necessary for them to recover in order to prevent relapse and create a healthy mind for the future.

Take care of yourself

You are undertaking a great responsibility supporting your loved one as they undergo treatment, but don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Ask family and friends for help or comfort when needed, and do your best to keep up with your hobbies, work, and exercise. The better you take care of yourself, the stronger you’ll be for your teen when they need your support.

Learn about their disorder and treatment

The more you understand the disorder your teen is being treated for, the easier it will be for you to provide the support they need. Also, understanding the style of treatment they are undergoing—whether it be medication, therapy or rehab—will help you deal with the process and provide support. Do some research and talk to professionals so you can stay in the loop with what they are going through.

Talk to someone or seek counseling

There are counseling services for parents and families of individuals suffering from substance abuse and mental health disorders. It may be worth talking to a professional or a friend about what’s going on in order to manage your stress.

Believe Everything Will Be Okay

Remember to stay positive and know that everything will be okay. You are taking the right steps to get help for your teen and are taking care of yourself and the rest of your family along the way. All you can do is take it one step at a time.
