Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that is produced in our brain. It is responsible for controlling our mood, and when levels get low, it can lead to depression. Here are some ways to boost serotonin naturally.
Moving your body is a great way to get your serotonin levels up. Aerobic activities, such as running, cycling, and dancing will do the trick. However, moving through a yoga class will also give you a similar boost. Do whatever feels natural for your body and don’t force it because it might lose the positive effect.
Put down the coffee and grab a smoothie instead. Caffeine is a serotonin suppressant and sugar doesn’t help its production either. Eating a combination of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy carbs (not cake!) and protein will not only give your mind and body a boost, but will make you feel great and increase your serotonin production.
We all need our vitamin D, but sometimes we get stuck inside or the sun is hiding behind clouds. It is recommended to get outside when you can because our bodies produce vitamin D when our skin absorbs UV rays from sunlight.
Stress has the ability to hinder serotonin production, so if you’re feeling stressed out, try and find a way to manage the pressure. Meditation and yoga are excellent practices to help alleviate stress, as is journalling, exercising and spending quality time with loved ones.
