While feeling depressed, exercise may be the last thing you want to do. Getting active is a sure way to chemically boost your mood and energy levels. It releases endorphins, which are brain chemicals that reduce the perception of pain and produce positive feelings in the body.

Take it one day at a time. Set yourself with small, achievable goals, such as getting to school on time. Making promises to yourself—and following through—is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You’ll be taking care of things that need to be done, and you’ll be building your self-esteem.

Rest up! Get as much sleep as your body needs. Experts recommend 8 to 10 hours a night for teenagers. Sleep is so important to your health, and being well rested gives you the power to be proactive in taking care of your mental health.

Laugh, dance and be silly! Let go of your anxieties for a moment. Carrying the burden of depression every minute of every day is enough to weigh anyone down. Give yourself a break by watching a funny movie, going out with your family, and doing something you enjoy that gets you out of your own head for a while.
