When you’re having a bad day or are feeling down, an inspiring or humorous read can be a great pick me up. Here are five novels worth checking out.

1. “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”

When you’re feeling down, why not escape with a bit of humor and an out-of-this-world adventure? Douglas Adams’ novel promises just that. By embarking on an interstellar expedition with plenty of laughs along the way, you’ll soon be feeling uplifted.

2. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”

Charlie is a quiet, isolated 15 year old boy who is living through the ups and downs of high school. Through his letters to an unknown recipient, readers learn all about his experiences—many of which you are likely to empathize with. This novel by Stephen Chbosky has humour, insight and lots of “feel good moments” to brighten your day.

3. “Before I Fall”

Samantha Kingston, the protagonist in this novel by Lauren Oliver, is popular, well-liked and seems to have it all together—until she dies in a tragic accident. Samantha is given the opportunity to relive the last day of her life seven times, learning (and teaching us) the importance of savouring each little moment that we experience.

4. “The Fault in Our Stars”

Recently made into a movie, “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green tells the story of Hazel and the relationship she develops with August while  living with a brain tumor. This is a novel about hope, perseverance and life as a teenager.

5. “Laughing at My Nightmare”

Shane Burcaw’s novel tells the story of his own experiences as a young adult in his twenties with spinal muscular atrophy. While this sounds like it might be an intense read, it’s told with wit and plenty of humor and shares a unique perspective on what it’s like to live as a teenager with a life-threatening illness.
