How to Talk to Your Teen About Coming Out

Coming out can be an emotionally difficult time for your teen, but your support and love can make it a little easier and more positive for them.

Love Yourself

The more comfortable you are with who you are, the easier it will be for your teen to share who they are with their friends and family. The more your teen understands their sexuality and identity, the less vulnerable they will be when coming out—they will be better equipped to answer questions, and receive positive and negative feedback.

Be Supportive

It is important for your teen to know that you are there to support them throughout their journey, no matter what happens. Knowing that there is someone who loves them and will fight for them will give your teen confidence as they take a big step in coming out.

Take Your Time

Time can play a large role in the telling of important information. Let your teen know there is no need to rush and that they should come out on their own time when they feel ready. They should not feel forced or pressured, but rather safe, comfortable and natural with the process.

Listen to Them

If your teen is thinking about coming out, it is likely their minds are full of thoughts and their hearts are full of emotions. Make sure to give them your undivided attention if they need to talk, are looking for advice, or just need to vent. Sometimes all they need is a sounding board and someone to understand what they’re going through.

Trust

The first people your teen will come out to should be people they trust. It’s more likely that these people will be supportive and open-minded once your teen tells them. Once they’ve told a few people who responded positively, it may make coming out to others easier.
