What Are the Treatment Options for My Teen’s Addiction?

If your teen is living with an addiction, you undoubtedly want to understand the treatment options available to them. Be assured that recovery is possible and that with appropriate support, your teen has the opportunity to live a healthy, fruitful life. If you have any questions about how to get started, contact a mental health professional for more information.

1. Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment centres provide 24 hour professional support and require individuals to move into some form of residence for a set period of time. They can be short term (ie: 3-6 weeks) or long term (ie: 6-12 months). These programs offer a holistic approach to recovery, as every aspect of the individual’s life is addressed through the program.

2. Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment programs do not require an individual to move into a facility. Instead, they can encompass a variety of recovery supports and strategies that fit into an individual’s regular daily life, many of which are listed below. Oftentimes, those who enrol in an inpatient program will also be referred to an outpatient one for follow-up support.

3. Group Therapy

Group therapies typically revolve around a 12-step program. In these groups, individuals generally share their experiences, support each other, learn together and encourage each other to take positive steps forward in their recovery journey.

4. Family Therapy

Addiction affects the whole family. As a result, involving all family members in therapy and recovery practices is an important way to ensure that recovery is done in a supportive way that ensures long-term results. Many treatment programs will require some level of participation in family therapy, even if it is just one session.

5. Equine Therapy

Using horses, partnered with professional therapists, is another form of treatment that is often available for teen’s recovering from addiction. The horses are used to help with self-reflection, problem solving, improving a sense of self, resolving inner conflicts and participating in group activities, all of which are important in addiction recovery. Equine therapy is usually partnered with another treatment program or facility.

6. Recovery High School

A recovery high school is a day school program that is specifically for individuals recovering from addiction. They meet all state high school requirements and provide teens a safe and supportive atmosphere to continue their recovery journey after rehab.

Not all options work for all teens, so be sure to connect with a mental health professional to understanding what would work best for yours. Remember that recovery is a very real and tangible opportunity for your teen.
