6 Resources for Teens in Distress

If you’re in distress, struggling with a mental health condition or unsure of how to cope with an overwhelming situation, know that you’re not alone. Many of your peers are experiencing similar feelings and there are many professionals who want to help you. Here are a variety of resources you can turn to.

1. National Suicide Hotline

If you’re struggling with depression and have thoughts of self-injury or suicide, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When you call, you’ll be directed to a crisis centre and connected to a trained professional closest to your area who will help you through your crisis and tell you about resources in your area. Their toll-free phone number is 1-800-273-8255.

2. Trevor Project Hotline

If you are a LGBTQ youth in crisis, call the Trevor Project Lifeline to get assistance specific to your situation. You can call their toll free number 24/7 at 1-866-488-7386. The Trevor Project also offers chat rooms and a texting service for LGBTQ youth in crisis or who want to connect with each other for support.

3. Crisis Text Line

If you’re uncomfortable with phone calls, or need assistance in a more discreet way, you can text the Crisis Text Line for assistance. All you have to do is text “Start” to 741-741 for free, confidential support. A trained crisis counsellor will receive your text and respond quickly. They will help you to calm down and stay safe and suggest local resources, all through simple text messaging.

4. Stomp Out Bullying Chat Line

If you prefer to get assistance on your computer, a chat room or chat line might be an ideal option for you while you’re in distress. If it’s bullying in particular that you’re a victim of, Stomp Out Bullying hosts a live chat line for teens just like you. Connect with trained volunteers who can help support you without judgments. Their counsellors have been specially trained to assist teens like you who are feeling distressed as a result of being bullied.

5. Teen Line

Sometimes you just want to talk to a peer who understands exactly what you’re going through when you’re in a crisis. If this sounds like you, then Teen Line might be a great resource for you. Their services enable you to call, text, chat or email a fellow teen for help with a variety of issues including mental health or bullying.

6. In-Person Assistance

While there are a plethora of phone, online and texting resources, there are plenty of in-person resources you can also get if you’re in crisis. Speaking with a mental health professional or a therapist can help you work through your struggles, develop healthy coping mechanisms and strive towards a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally. Above all else, remember that you are not alone.
