Programs for troubled teens and or intervention may be the only way you as the parent can stop the vicious cycle of drugs and drug abuse, violence, disrespect or low self esteem. Taking action on behalf of your troubled teen
Many
parents feel as though they can get themselves through their issues without
the assistance of others or the assistance from services. They may push family
away, overwork themselves, become reclusive, avoid their homes,
detach completely and in extreme cases, drink heavily or use drugs to avoid
the situation. Help from others is most certainly what these parents need.
Intervening on a troubled teens life that is rapidly spiraling down the wrong
path is difficult and will most likely cause problems.
In the event that a teenager does want help and is willing to ask for it, some don't know how to ask for the help they need. Some are afraid of what the answer might be if they ask for help from their parents. A structured program will mean the end of the drugs and pain which could in turn mean the end of avoidance and the beginning of facing their problems. Drugs are a huge part of many teen's life and a core symptom of a much larger problem.
The reason why drug use is so prevalent is because drugs work. Drugs do what they are supposed to do; make the person using the drugs feel good. People take drugs because they do not feel good and drugs fix that much in the same way that food will make the "overeater" feel good. These people that use drugs to feel good are selfish and for the most part believe that they should always feel good. They do not understand that you cannot always feel good. Without knowing what "bad" feels like, knowing what "good" feels like is not a possibility. You must feel bad to have something to compare the good feelings with. It is this principle that drug abusers disagree with or choose to ignore.
The Importance of Intervention
Intervention is a powerful concept. By interrupting this behavior, you are communicating that this problem will no longer work in your household. Interruption in the behavior of a self destructive teenager is critical in correcting the problem. Nothing will change if action from you is not taken. When action is taken, it is very important to remember that things will most likely become worse before they become better.
One way, you as a parent of a struggling, defiant or self-destructive teen can take action is by gathering the information. If you are not informed, you will not have the power. Your teenager is extremely smart and most likely more intelligent than you are - that's our goal as parents. If you are not informed, you teenager will manipulate and run circles around you.
