Parenting is hard. There are no easy answers, textbook solutions or quick fixes. Your children are unique, and so are you, making every day with them a challenge, but also a gift. Going through this journey on your own is even more difficult and can have its fair share of challenges. With that in mind, here are some parenting tips for single parents.

Everyone needs help and support with parenting. When you are a single parent, this is the case even more. Ask friends and family members for assistance from time to time. You can even join a support group for single parents or hire a regular babysitter if it fits into your budget. If not, consider a childcare swap with another parent. While it may be tempting to believe that you have everything under control, asking for help will alleviate long-term stress, allowing you to be a better parent for your children as a result.

Create a Daily Routine

Setting up a regular routine for bedtimes, mealtimes, extracurriculars and homework helps to build structure for yourself and a sense of security for your children. This will help you with time management, and, if your kids are old enough, might help them to regulate themselves, taking some of the pressure off of you.

Establish Clear Ground Rules

Establishing clear rules and consequences is important to regulating your children’s behaviors. If you’re coming out of a separation, it’s helpful to work with your ex to ensure that you’re both laying down the same expectations. Children need this regularity to thrive.

Take Time for Yourself

When you’re a single parent, it can be easy to forget about yourself and focus solely on your kids. However, it’s important to remember to take care of yourself, too. Try to eat well, get enough sleep and take time for regular exercise. This might leave a little less time for having a perfect, put together house or extravagant homemade meals, but remember that if you’re doing well emotionally and physically, your children will benefit.

Remember to Have Fun

Don’t forget to have fun with your kids! While parenting is a lot of work, especially when you’re on your own, there’s a lot of joy it can bring too. Plan day trips, activities, and special events with your kids, cherishing moments as they grow up. Don’t forget to laugh along the way, even when things get a little messy.
