New York City has a high rate of drug use. According to a 2010 report from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the rate of drug usage in the past year was at 16 percent, with close to 1 million New York residents using illegal drugs. The national average was 14 percent. Marijuana was used by nearly 730,000 people in the city, with use most common among those ages 18 to 25. New York City ranked below the national average for painkiller use; however, it ranked above the national average for cocaine, heroin, tranquilizer and sedative use. In terms of stimulant use, the New York City percentage and national average were about the same.
The statistics from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene also show that 10 percent of all hospitalizations in New York City are due to drug use. Opioids and cocaine were the biggest contributors, at 46 percent and 47 percent of drug-related hospitalizations, respectively. The biggest percentage of hospitalizations were those of New York City residents ages 35 to 54 (61 percent). More than half were from low-income households. Among New York City residents ages 25 to 34, drug overdose is one of the leading causes of death.
