The 2006 and 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health released some sobering statistics about drug and alcohol use among New York teens. In those years, about 9 percent of teens in the state used illegal drugs. Of treatment admission rates among New York teens, most were for marijuana use – 23.6 percent for those ages 12 to 17 and just under 17 percent for those 18 to 20 years old.
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse states that most drug addicts (90 percent) started using drugs before age 18. Drug use is starting earlier and earlier in many areas. One in eight teens nationwide is already addicted to drugs or alcohol. It is estimated that 6 million teens across the country, including in New York, are using alcohol, cigarettes, prescription drugs or marijuana. A teenager’s brain is still developing, so drugs interfere with the development and make addiction much more likely to occur.
Alcohol Treatment for Your Teen
Underage drinking may seem like a game to many teens who just want to party and hang out with friends, but alcohol use has serious consequences. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states that 5,000 people under 21 years old die every year as a result from drinking. Research shows that the average drinking age is decreasing, with the average age of first alcohol use now at age 14.
Many factors can influence drinking in teens. These include genetics, tolerance to alcohol, personality type, environmental influences and risk-taking. Excessive alcohol usage can affect the brain, liver and growth hormones in a growing teen. Therefore, if your teen is engaging in alcohol use, treatment should be considered before dependency forms.
There are several main ways to treat alcoholism, with detoxification being one of the first steps in many treatment programs. Detoxification removes all traces of alcohol from the patient’s body and basically requires them to “dry out” for three to seven days. During this time, the patient will go through withdrawal symptoms, which can range from mild shakes to life-threatening tremors. The detoxification process should be supervised by a medical professional to ensure safety throughout the process.
There are also prescription medications available to help those who quit drinking remain sober. Although there is no pill made specifically to cure alcoholism, there are several drugs that can be used to reduce cravings. Antabuse is a pill that makes a person sick to their stomach if they consume alcohol. Acamprosate is helpful for managing withdrawal symptoms. Naltrexone is a drug that helps reduce cravings.
Alcoholism support groups are the oldest forms of alcohol treatment and also some of the most effective when used in conjunction with another treatment method. Support programs focus on the fellowship of others who are also struggling with alcohol addiction. The most common support group is the 12-step program, but there are others.
