The Indiana University Center for Health Policy published a report entitled Prescription Drug (Rx) Abuse in Indiana, which shows the results of the state’s 2009 statistics regarding prescription drug use. More than 1 million people in the state reported that they had abused prescription drugs at least once in their lifetime. Lifetime use, past-year use and past-month use of painkillers in Indiana exceeded the national average in nearly all areas. More than 6 percent of Indiana residents had used painkillers for non-medical use in the past year. Less than 1 percent had used OxyContin, one of the most commonly abused painkillers.
Among Indiana adolescents, ages 12 to 17, 7.74 percent had used painkillers for non-medical purposes in the past year, exceeding the national average of just under 7 percent. Those between the ages of 18 and 25 used painkillers most often. In Indiana, the rate was 15.48 percent, much higher than the national average of 12.28 percent. Those older than age 26 used painkillers the least, but the numbers still exceeded the national average.
Signs That Your Teen’s Drug Use Is Out of Control
Irregular drug use may not interfere dramatically with your teen’s life. However, frequent use can cause many negative changes in your teen’s life. According to Helpguide.org, drug abuse starts when your teen is neglecting responsibilities. They may be absent from school or performing poorly. Your teen may also be neglecting chores and other obligations.
Drugs cause users to take risks. Your teen may be using dirty needles, driving while intoxicated or having unsafe sex. These risks can lead to legal trouble, such as DUI charges, theft and violence. Drugs can also cause relationship problems. You may be getting into arguments often with your teen. Your teen may be getting into fights with friends at school. They may be disrespecting authority. If you notice any of these signs, talk to your teen about your concerns. You can help them before drug addiction truly takes hold.
