Jacksonville, Florida is located in Duval County. The report 2008 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey showed statistics of drug and alcohol use in students grades 6 to 12 throughout the county. The report covered 948 high school students and 1,002 middle school students. The findings show that marijuana use in the county has decreased by more than 10 percent in an eight-year period. No high school students had used heroin in the previous month, and alcohol is the most commonly used drug. More than 47 percent of Duval County students had used alcohol in their lifetime and close to 25 percent had used it in the past month.
Among middle school students, prescription drug abuse within the previous month was at 1.7 percent. The following drugs registered a usage rate of less than 1 percent: cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, steroids, club drugs, LSD and depressants. For high schools students, the following drugs registered a usage rate of less than 1 percent: cocaine, crack, amphetamines, steroids, LSD, GHB and Rohypnol.
What Parents Should Know About Drug Abuse
Helpguide.org discusses some things parents should know about drug abuse. Frequent drug use can lead to addiction, especially in teens, since their brains are still developing. Quitting drugs is not a matter of willpower. Drugs change the brain’s reward center and ways of thinking, so a person abusing drugs may lack the self-control and rational thinking needed to successfully quit on their own. Although addiction is a chronic brain disease, it does not mean that your teen’s life in Jacksonville is ruined. Getting help right away can help your teen to function normally and live a productive life.
There is the myth that someone has to hit rock bottom before addiction treatment will be effective. In fact, the opposite is true. The sooner you get help for your teen, the easier the treatment process will be. Although it is easier for teens to do well in treatment if they truly want to go, many people who are forced into treatment by family, employers or the legal system will reap many benefits from treatment.
