San Diego County in California is struggling with prescription drug abuse. According to a July 2012 article from the North County Times, deaths from overdose have increased from 211 to 267 in a four-year period. A report card from San Diego County’s Prescription Drug Task Force looks at various factors surrounding abuse, such as deaths, arrests, prosecutions and take-back efforts. The report card showed some serious issues with prescription drugs in the county.
Robberies of pharmacies have nearly tripled, from 9 in 2008 to 26 in 2011. The number of emergency room visits for prescription drug abuse has also spiked. There were 2,937 visits in 2011, up from 1,784 just four years earlier. The biggest problem in the county appears to be OxyContin.
Take-back events have been useful in collecting unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Nearly 11,000 pounds were collected in 2007. In 2011, that number increased to more than 18,000 pounds.
What to Look for in Treatment for Your Teen
Sure, a facility with a large room and a fabulous view would be nice for your teen to experience, but will it make him or her recover faster? More than likely, no. When looking for treatment, focus on the most important factors when making your choice. Things such as proper licensing and accreditation are more important factors in your teen’s recovery. You want your teen to be in good hands and accreditation means that the facility and staff meet specific standards.
You should also look for a facility with a high success rate. If the facility’s rate is low or if the facility refuses to offer any insight on its performance, that is a red flag.
You should also look into a facility that has additional services for the long term, such as an aftercare program or support group. A counselor or other staff member should review a long-term plan for your teen with you.
